glinda: yellow crocus on a bed of snow (3 weeks 4 dreamwidth)
[personal profile] glinda posting in [community profile] companions
Three weeks for Dreamwidth as snuck up upon us, so I thought it seemed an excellent excuse for a wee game of drabble tag.

For those new to this game, basically, someone leaves some prompts, someone else replies with a drabble (or comment fic of other size, given the character limit on dreamwidth comments, that can be a fairly large fic) and leaves up to three prompts for the next person, who in turn responds with their own drabbles/comment fic and leaves their own prompts. Your responses can be as long or as short as you like, I've always thought the point of them being drabbles is that its low stress, lots of people with limited time can take part and it gets lots of people talking and writing and sharing and its all rather fun.

You can write pairing fic or gen, but given the nature of the comm please keep the focus on the companions themselves. I've stuck a couple of prompts in the comments to kick things off, feel free to interpret them as you will. If you're struggling to come up with your own prompts to leave then...well the Doctor Who Random Pairing Generator may be of interest to you.

Also, in the spirit of the fest, please don't cross-post your fills outside dreamwidth until the three weeks are up.

“Oh, Jamie. We'll never find our way out of here!”

“Now, Zoe, you know that's not true. We'll just go back the way we came.” Jamie looked around. “Come on. This way.”

“No, Jamie,” Zoe said as she shook her head. “I'm sure it's not that way.”

“Well, then....” Jamie turned and pointed himself in the opposite direction. “This way,” he said as he began marching off.

“It isn't that way, either,” Zoe protested.

“And how do you know that,” Jamie asked exasperatedly.

“I just know it. Like I know you. I'm sure I know you. Don't I?”

Zoe awoke.

"Strike, parry, strike. Good. Again."

Jenny pushes back a strand of hair that's been sticking to her face and strikes, parries, strikes. If anyone saw her, a dark-haired girl in breeches and a tight-buttoned vest, dancing a slow-slow-quick bladed waltz, partnered by a lizard-woman-- she doesn't know what they'd think, and she doesn't know what they'd be more surprised by.

Not Vastra's green skin, she thinks, or the tiny gemstone scales that dust her hands. No, it would be her, Jenny, her smooth-silk movements, her ease with the blade. Not that she's anywhere near as good as Vastra, who parries her sword with ease. Not that she has her mistress's confidence, or sardonic eye. She's handicapped by her race, her birth, her very body, and she knows it.

But she's growing. She's learning. And Vastra, she thinks, is proud.

"Good," Vastra says, and smiles. "Again."

On the Edge

Vastra's sword slides and grates down the edge of her own. The motion is mesmerising, every aspect its own thought.

The slithering hiss of metal reminds her of Vastra's tongue, flicking out to prey on unwary people who don't realise just how far she can reach. The wary, too, sometimes, who know her as a danger but underestimate her strength.

The sparks that fly up every time their blades make contact brings to mind the stars at night, outside the dirty yellow glow of the city lights and the blanket of smog. The memory of lying in her lady's lap somewhere far away from any other being.

Edge clatters against edge, flat against edge, flat against flat. Jenny's skills improve daily; she parries Vastra's blade almost as easily as her lovely partner parries hers, but still Vastra slides beneath her guard, sometimes, in so many ways. The speed, strength, skill. The inhuman beauty of her that so nearly distracts Jenny from her sword, especially at times when she doesn't dare let her mind drift away; the present, for example.

Vastra's green skin glistens under the lamplight, and she wants... oh, she wants her.

Her lady draws her in suddenly, snatching at the hilt of her sword with sparkling hands to toss them both aside. Jenny gasps against her throat, startled, delighted, feeling the solidity of Vastra's arms across her back, where her corsets would be were they not alone and engaged in an activity entirely inappropriate for stays.

"My dear," Vastra murmurs against the shell of her ear, her breath cool, "I don't want to hurt you. You weren't considering your sword. What were you considering?"

Jenny almost laughs, held tight against her mistress, and tilts her head back to meet Vastra's eyes. Here she can be unafraid of being too bold for her station. Here, being a maid doesn't feel important. Here they need not be separated. She smiles at Vastra coyly.

Vastra's grin widens, takes on a sly edge. "Oh, I see."

Jenny giggles, finally, and lifts her face to be kissed. "My lady?"

"Say no more."

“No, Ian, not again!” said Barbara. “I refuse.”

Ian glanced at her in the semi-darkness of the maze. “If you’ve got any better ideas, I’m listening.”

“Oh, well,” Barbara said, pulling a face at him. She removed her cardigan. “If I must.”

Ian set to work unravelling it, and then tied the end to a wooden support. “You can have my jacket.”

“That isn’t the point,” said Barbara. “I don’t see you doing any knitting – and what happens if I run out?”

“That’s hardly the end of the world.”

Barbara’s lips twitched. “At this rate, it very well might be!”
